My most memorable moment was dancing in this year's Okinawan Festival. Getting my picture in the newspaper was very exciting. I love taking the dance class because it's a fun way to learn more about my Okinawan roots. The hardest thing about preparing for the recital is the extra rehearsals. My goal is to be a good dancer, and to learn the beat and rhythm. For me, the dancing teaches me rhythm and beat, patience, learning to work with others, concentration and focus. It also teaches me more about the Okinawan culture and people.

I have always wanted to learn Okinawan dancing ever since I was a child. In October 2004, I watched the Ukaji Deebiru program and liked what I saw. Nakachi Sensei and her students did an outstanding job. In December, I joined the group. It has been a very rewarding experience.

Okinawan music and dance is part of my youthful happy memories. My grandfather played the sanshin, my grandmother played the koto, and the elders danced at family parties.
Now, my brother is learning to play the sanshin and I am eager to learn to dance. We would like to entertain our mother on her 88th birthday in three years with Okinawan music and dance.
I would also like to make Okinawan music and dance a part of my children's and grandchildren's memory.

I'm happy to be able to learn a little of my culture by taking this Okinawan dance class. I've always loved Okinawan music.

I have always been in dance since I was a little child. When I was younger my family and I used to go to the various Bon Dances around the community, and I really looked forward to it - every Friday and Saturday nights during the summer. I had wanted to grow as a dancer and decided to take (at the time) Japanese dancing further, so I joined a classical Japanese dance school. However, I have always felt more of a connection to Okinawan culture because it is so similar to Hawaiian Culture in that there is a deep respect and reverence for things but still a festive and light-hearted feeling around it.
I am determined to be the very best dancer I am capable of becoming and my determination is to inspire other people (Okinawan or not) to learn the rich culture and heritage of Okinawa, and to help perpetuate it through dance. Other people need to know that if I can learn and dance so can they!

The summer of bon festivals renewed my interest in Okinawan dancing. I love the music, movements (exercise!) I appreciate the complete aspect of dancing . Thank you!
