Kiyoko - 2006

I always liked Okinawan Dance and Music. I joined this school because I was impressed by the recital that was held at the Hawaii Theatre and Concert Hall.  Ganbarimasu.

Shari - Sept. 2006

I became interested in Okinawan dance in the summer when I met a few friendly Senjukai students at the bon dances. They had invited me to come to the class to learn.

I also visited the website, and observed practices for the Okinawan Festival which stirred my emotions to become a part of this group and learn to do thosedance too.

I have no formal dance experience however, I would like to learn everything that I can about each dance, i.e. the history of it, etc. and to be able to perform it perfectly.

Karen - Sept. 2006

Many years ago, my mother wanted me to take Okinawan Dance but I refused and told her I was not interested.

Three years ago, I started taking Bon Dance classes and liked the Okinawan Dances the Best. So, when my friend Helene told me about the Okinawan dance class, I decided to see what it was like and I found out that I really enjoyed it.

The teachers and students are very nice, friendly and helpful. Thank you!

Rena - December 2007

I joined the Senjukai Dance School immediately upon my return from Okinawa. I always had a desire to get into dance, but was reluctant due to shyness. The connection to my ancestral lands has made it possible for me to continue this rich legacy through dance. I am happy and joyful to be immersed in Okinawan music, dance and culture. Even more so than its cultural elements, I am mesmerized by the sincerity, resiliency, and pure hearts of Okinawans.

I have been dance less than 3 months, and I have come to genuinely appreciate the people that I dance with. All of the students are gracious and helpful. I believe that loving and nurturing spirit stems from Sensei who creates this atmosphere for her students to follow. The Senjukai Dance studio is a stage for us to practice not only dance, but humility, respect and kindness towards each other. I highly encourage anyone who is thinking about dance to come and join.

Clinton - Feb. 2008

I took interested in Okinawan stage dance a couple of years ago when I started taking lesson for Sanshin. I’ve gain a deeper appreciation for the culture and music. By taking Okinawan dance I feel I can learn the music from a different angle.

Jacqueline - March 2007

I wanted learn Okinawan Dance because my mom had tried it before.  I am very interested in my my culture and my grandma would always take me to festivals that show Okinawan dances. My grandmother wants me to perform at Festivals and I am looking forward to make that happen.  My mom wants me to not quit and to keep learning. I also want to learn more dances because I remember watching people dancing with fans and I had always wished to learn.  I hope to reach my goals and make others happy and proud.
